Velma DeFrates, the daughter of Sophia (Anderson) and Severin Sather, was born on March 8, 1924 in Starkweather, ND.
After graduating from Starkweather High School in 1942, Velma worked for the war department in Chicago typing telegrams to soldiers asking them to report for active duty. She returned to North Dakota and attended Interstate Business College in Fargo.
