Portland- Thomas Frederick Black, 74, lifelong resident of Portland, passed away on July 3, 2013 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. Tom was born in Portland on December 7, 1938, a son of Thomas and Helena (Bellefontaine) Black. He graduated from Cheverus High School in 1957. While at Cheverus, he pursued his passion for sports, particularly basketball, where his yearbook described him as, “Sparkling on the court” .

Following high school, Tom enlisted in the Army where he served his country in Alaska.

After serving in the Army, Tom returned to Maine where he met and later married Clarice “Chris” Charlotte LaPlante. The couple went on to have two sons, Thomas F. Black of Gorham (wife Carol and daughter Chelsea), and Damon R. Black of Portland (wife Kristen and daughters Delainey and Avery). In addition to their own sons, Tom and Chris helped raise John “Jack” Adamo who was much a part of the couple’s immediate family.

Tom’s competitive nature served him well as a sales representative for 3M after serving in the Army. Several years later he established Custom Sounds Systems and operated the company for the rest of his career , working with many well known establishments in the Greater Portland area.

Tom enjoyed decades of playing tennis and being in the pool with family and friends.
