Georgetown, ME – Stephan David Lafer of Georgetown ME, and formerly of Newton, MA, passed unexpectedly on Thursday, June 30, 2022. He was only 47. He was loved unconditionally by his family, his friends, and even strangers he befriended daily because he was that kind of person who was instantly friends with everyone. He will be deeply missed.
Stephan was born in Boston, MA on February 2, 1975, a son of Jerome D. and Catherine M. C. (LePen) Lafer. Stephan grew up in Newton MA and graduated high school in Alpharetta Georgia. Several years later made his way back to Newton and it was there, in 2004, that he entered the lives of Rachel A. Monbouquette and her daughter Isabella. He instantly fell in love with them both. On June 21, 2006, Rachel and Stephan were married. They had Sebastian and Ronan in Newton and in 2009 moved to Maine where he and Rachel felt a deep connection to the outdoors. It’s here where they had their 3rd son Ivan and became embedded in the community.
Stephan brought light to every room he stepped in. His sense of humor, encyclopedic knowledge and energy was infectious. He made everyone feel like they were the only ones in the room. Stephan had the most magnetic of personalities; everyone wanted to be in his presence. His thirst for knowledge was insatiable – he got it through books, and movies but also through his ability to listen to stories told by everyone he encountered. He loved live music and would travel far to catch his favorite bands. He had the perfect movie quote ready to drop at just the right moment. Stephan was a farmer and loved working with his hands and especially with soil – both at home and at his farm. But more than anything in the world, Stephan was head over heels in love with his family. He treasured Rachel and his children and talked about them incessantly. He was so proud of all their accomplishments – the big and the small.
Stephan is survived by his wife, Rachel A. Monbouquette, his daughter, Isabella Monbouquette, 3 sons, Sebastian Lafer, Ronan Lafer, and Ivan Lafer, his parents, Jerome and Catherine Lafer of Newton, MA, one brother, Alexander Lafer and his wife Denise of Milford, MA, one sister, Emmanuelle Skala and her husband Erik of Needham, MA and many nieces and nephews.
