Sophie Simonson, age 91, a lifelong resident of Hibbing, died Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Fairview University Medical Center – Mesabi in Hibbing. She was born September 6, 1917 in Carson Lake, MN, the daughter of Stephen and Annie (Robatic) Basarich. She was a graduate of Hibbing High School. She married Luvern Simonson at St. Basil Serbian Orthodox Church in Chisholm.
Sophie was a member of St. Basil Serbian Orthodox Church in Chisholm, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Circle of Serbian Sisters. She was a retail clerk at Minnesota Market and Modern Liquors. She also was a bookkeeper at First Bank for 10 years until her retirement.
Sophie is survived by her son, Gary (Donna) Simonson of Hibbing; two grandchildren, Brian Simonson, and Melissa (Andy) Fisher of Hibbing; and one great-grandchild, Easton Fisher; a sister, Dessie (George) Glumac of Hibbing; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Luvern; sisters, Sophia, Mary, and Zora; brothers, Bogdan, Michael, and George.
