Shake Kalousdian passed away November 2 , 2016 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Born May, 16, 1921, in Istanbul, Turkey, she was the daughter of Ervant Antranik and Verjean Samuel (Ketchjian) Apkarian. Her father was a survivor of the Genocide. Along with 400 other Armenian men, he had been taken by the Turks. One of very few survivors, he returned home and, as a protective husband and father, he took his family to safety in Bulgaria, when Shake was six months old. She grew up in Bulgaria and received her education. But, as the world plunged into World War Two, Shake experienced the terrors of that war. After the war ended, Shake was able to immigrate to the United States, leaving behind her parents, her brother, and lifelong friends. Shake met Albert K. Kalousdian and they were married in Ann Arbor. She became a devoted wife and mother to her children and grandchildren. Using her abilities of knitting and sewing, she supported her husband in their family dry cleaning business as a seamstress and clothing alterations.
