Sam Mikel, Jr. of Steelville, Missouri passed away Friday, July 22, 2016 in his home at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 15 days. He was born January 7, 1929 in St. Louis, Missouri to Sam and Nora Mikel, Sr. On March 22, 1951 in Piggott, AR, he was united in marriage to Beverly Joyce Whiteside and to this union five children were born.
Sam served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1954. He played minor league baseball for the Cardinals many years ago and was roommates with Earl Weaver, who later became the manager of the Baltimore Orioles. Sam was employed at Colonial Baking Co. in St. Louis and retired in 1992 after thirty years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Steelville, MO. Sam enjoyed playing Blitz, buying scratch-off cards, playing horseshoes and going down the river with Buzz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bevery Joyce Mikel; one son, Timothy Mikel; two brothers, Skip Campbell and James Arthur Mikel; one sister, Marjorie Probst; two brothers-in-law, George Whiteside and wife Mary and Al Duvall and wife Glenna; and one sister-in-law, Juanita Whiteside.
He will be sadly missed by his two sons, Danny Mikel of Steelville, MO and Larry Mikel of Mexico, MO; two daughters, Debra Austin and husband Carey of St. Charles, MO and Donna Reinagel and husband Steve of St. Peters, MO; one brother-in-law, John Huesgen and wife Alela of Frankenstein, MO; seven grandchildren Carey Wayne Austin, Jr., Ryan Austin, Brannan Austin and wife Stacey, Tyler Austin, Melanie Snelson and husband Rhett, Stephen Reinagel and wife Erica and Kayla Reinagel; ten great-grandchildren, Riley, Hailey, Ryder, Ronan, Evan, Ryan, Luke, Jack, Thomas and Emily; other relatives and friends.
The Family received friends from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Honored to be casket bearers were Dan Mikel, Carey Wayne Austin, Jr., Tyler Austin, Ryan Austin, Stephen Reinagel and Brannan Austin.
