Rubina “Ruby” Cecilia Starren (Devine) was born on January 9, 1917 to Oscar and Lydia Anderson in Roseau, MN. She grew up and attended school in Roseau with her four brothers and one sister. She graduated from Roseau High School in 1935.

At the age of 19, Rubina married Jack P. Starren on August 30, 1936 in Warroad, MN. They had one son and one daughter. They lived and worked at Haas Island, and then lived and raised their children in Warroad, MN. While her children were in school she was a room-mother and was active in P.T.A. and many other school functions.

Rubina worked as a cook, a seamstress, a store clerk at several stores in Warroad (Meeks Grocery, Wings Mercantile, Anderson Jewelry, Red Owl Store). She was the assistant village clerk for several years and eventually retired as a postal clerk at the Warroad Post Office. She worked for the City of Warroad for 10 years. Rubina was on the original committee that helped make the current Warroad Care Center and retirement home a reality.

She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening; many others crafts and was also on a bowling team with three friends for several years. She enjoyed listening to western music and old hymns. She sang in a quartet in Chicago during the “Century of Progress.” Ruby firmly believed in the golden rule, “Do unto others as you would have done to you.” Her favorite hymns are “The old Rugged Cross” and “What a Friend we have in Jesus.” Her favorite Bible verses are John 3:16, and Psalms 23. In 1978 Ruby met and married Jim Devine and they were snowbirds living in Arizona in the winter, and Minnesota in the summer.

Ruby Starren (Devine) passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at the Warroad Care Center. She was 89 years old.

Ruby is survived by her two children Sharon (Curtis) Johnson of Warroad, and Jack (Linda) Starren of Altamonte Springs, Fl; five grandchildren, Leslie, Julie, Jackie, Suzanne, and Scott; four great-grandchildren, Jessie, Kelly, Mandy, and Jamie, and six great-great grandchildren, James, Ardimus, Daphne, Mia Lynn, Erick and Mitch.

Her first husband, Jack Starren, and second husband Jim Devine, Parents, four brothers, Alvin, Edner, Leonard, and Oren, and sister Helen Paulson preceded her in death.
