Robert (Bob) Burrows, 62 of New Gloucester, passed away at Maine Medical Center on February 28, 2014 after a brief illness. He was born in Westbrook on August 27, 1951. He was the son of Joseph and Mary (Dunlea) and was fond of telling the story that his mom was on the way to the hospital but he was impatient and ended up being born on the steps of the hospital. He also claimed to be Westbrook Hospital’s biggest baby EVER.
Bob graduated from Westbrook High School in 1970 where he participated in basketball and baseball. That love of sports was passed along to both of his girls as he umpired and later coached their New Gloucester softball teams. He also was very involved in their school activities chaperoning the ski bus to Lost Valley for a number of years. He also enjoyed this time with them and their classmates. He helped with the PTA when the girls were in elementary school and with Girl Scouts. He loved to relate how all the dads “treed a raccoon” during a Girl Scout outing at Sebago Lake State Park.
Bob was a hardworking man who took a lot of pride in his work and family. He worked for Lowell (Brookie) Brookings while in high school and then Pioneer Plastics, Maine General Railroad and for Parker Nichols in Portland for 25 years, retiring in July due to health reasons.
Bob loved to travel with his wife, Sue, to tropical locations for relaxation. He was never happier than to sit on the beach with a drink in his hand and people watch. This occupation led him to have incredible accurate impressions of people that he met in life.
Bob was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Mary (another story) and brother Frederick and numerous half brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sue, his two daughters, Heather Burrows Adams of New Gloucester and Melinda Shoults of Breckenridge Hills, Missouri, his sister Mary Lou Simpson of Fort Worth, Texas and the loves of his life, his three granddaughters Brittney Hutchinson, Ashley Hutchinson and Eleanor Shoults.
