Robert “Bob” Qualset died from cancer on September 11, 2022. He was born to Helen and Rudy Qualset on June 2, 1947, in Minneapolis. His family moved to Mankato before Bob entered Kindergarten. He attended schools in Mankato through Mankato State College.
Bob had a carefree boyhood, riding his bicycle all around Mankato to play baseball. He continued on his bike to deliver newspapers. He also has the distinction as an adult of having ridden, outside, 889 consecutive days in the Mankato area. He was also an avid basketball and tennis player.
Bob taught Math, Electronics and Physics at Redwood Falls and Gaylord, MN. He was employed for 35 years as a CPA. He served three years as a commissioned officer in NOAA, retiring as a lieutenant.
Bob married his ninth grade sweetheart, Marsha Plocher, on March 28, 1969. He loved assisting her in their gardens, by doing the heavy lifting and planting. With his usual wit, he would say, “You should have married a farmer.”
Bob enjoyed nine years as a small group leader in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church confirmation program. He served as treasurer on the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Endowment Board for many years.
He liked to think of himself as the #1 Moondogs fan.
After retirement, Bob volunteered for ten years as a Physics tutor at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He thought it was the best job he’d ever had.
Bob is survived by his wife, Marsha, his brother-in-law, Joe Strunka, brother-in-law, David Plocher (Michelle), his niece, Jessica Plocher, his nephews, David Plocher and Joe Plocher, and his brother-in-law, Steven Plocher (Colleen). He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Susan, his brother, Craig, and his step-mother, Marian Qualset.
