Robert L. Marton, 94, a Laurel native, businessman and World War II veteran, died October 13.
Robert attended Laurel Elementary and graduated from Laurel High School. He was a talented artist, and attended classes at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the University of Maryland. Following his service in the Pacific in World War II, he married Mary Hopkins in 1946, in what is believed to be the only double wedding at St. Mary’s Church, along with Mary’s sister Winifred and Vincent Morgans.
Robert and Mary made their home with their four children on Prince George Street, where he lived until his death. Mary passed away in 2009.
He had a career in retail management in Washington, D.C. and Laurel, and operated a bookkeeping and income tax service from his home. He was a long-time member of the Laurel Rotary Club, serving in many roles including president. He was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans (past commander of the DAV Laurel chapter).
Robert is survived by his children, William (wife Victoria) of Eldersburg, Robert (wife Robin) of Laurel, Rosemary (husband Donald (deceased)) of Belmont, North Carolina, and Lu Anne (husband Thomas) of Mount Airy; sister-in-law Winifred Morgans; cousins Francis Hiett Bond, Charlotte Hiett Redman, and Leroy Hiett; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
