Robert T. Hood, Jr. M.D., Ph.D., 94 of Walpole, passed away at his home on November 4th with his wife by his side. Born in Pittsburgh, PA on October 3, 1919, he was the son of Eleanor (Clark) and Robert T. Hood, Sr., M.D. Robert grew up in Pittsburgh and attended schools there. He went on to graduate from the Florida Military Academy before receiving his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Amherst College. He would then attend medical school at the University of Pittsburgh, where he received his medical degree in 1944. From 1948-1953, he was a Fellow in Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, where he received his Ph.D. in surgery from the University of Minnesota. He worked in surgery for many years, where he was the Assistant Surgeon for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and later in Los Angeles, CA. He also had several teaching appointments at Amherst College, the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, the University of Southern California, and finally at UCLA. He was a member of, and held several positions in, the Los Angeles County Medical Association, the California Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. He was also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Los Angeles Surgical Society, and was the past President and Secretary of the San Fernando Valley Surgical Society. He served two tours with the United States Navy, where he was part of the Navy Medical Corps during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He and his wife, Karna, purchased a home in Maine in 1982, where Dr. Hood enjoyed horseback riding, playing golf and boating. He was an avid reader and a great writer. He penned many medical papers and although unsuccessful, his wife tried to convince him to write a book. He is survived by his wife, Karna Hood of Walpole; and a son, William Hood and his wife Sasi of California.
