Age 77, passed away on Friday, February 15, 2008. He was born on November 14, 1930 on the family homestead in Dany Township, the son of Carl and Alice (Avery) Smith. Robert married Kathleen (Felzke) on November 25, 1950 and they raised three sons during their 57 years of marriage. After Robert graduated from Portland High School in 1949, he worked and retired from Michigan State University after 43 years of service as a roofing supervisor. He also never abandoned his continued devotion and work to the Smith family farm. He enjoyed fishing and took numerous fishing and canoeing trips with friends.
