Rick Robert Koyiol, age 65 of Lake Eshquagama died unexpectedly, Friday, September 23, 2016 at Essentia Health – Virginia. He was born in Duluth, on September 21, 1951, the son of Robert and Shirley (Salo) Koyiol; living there his early years and then moving with his family to Hoyt Lakes. He graduated from Aurora-Hoyt Lakes High School in 1969, attended UMD and graduated in 1972, then earned his CPA certification in 1973. He embarked on a career in accounting and finance for the next 35 years in Minnesota, California, and Arizona. Along this journey he met the love of his life, Judy Smith, and they were married January 6, 1982, on the island of Hawaii. They returned to Minnesota in 2003, settling on lovely Lake Eshquagama, eventually became “Snow Birds”, and enjoyed their winters in Tucson, Arizona.
His favorite past time was golf and he enjoyed playing a variety of golf courses throughout the country. He particularly loved teaching his son, Joseph, the game, and in recent years was a youth golf instructor during his winters in Tucson.
He is survived by his wife: Judith Smith Koyiol; his son: Joseph and daughter-in-law Rachel of Burnsville, MN; sister: Sherry Maxwell of Shorewood, MN; Aunts and Uncles: Vada and Bill Johnson of Florida, John and Gaile Drazenovich of Hibbing, MN, M. Kay Salo of Island Lake, MN and Kent and Kay Salo, also of Island Lake, MN; along with nieces, nephews, numerous cousins, friends, and his beloved dog, Alice.
He was preceded in death by his father: Robert Koyiol in 2002, mother: Shirley Koyiol in 2007 and Uncles: Ron Salo and Don Salo.
