Richard Riley Cline

Portland

Age 94, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and Christian friend went to be with the Lord on April 16, 2007. He was born on August 2, 1912, to Arthur and Bessie (Sherwood) Cline in Stanton. He died at his family home in Portland surrounded by many loved ones. He attended a country school in Stanton through the 8th grade. He worked as a farm hand, purchased and operated his own farm, worked for Ionia Manufacturing Co, and in 1964 started his own business in general carpentry. After the death of his 1st wife Edith, he married Clarice in 1960, and after her death married Clarabelle in 1997. He was a faithful member of the Pleasant Valley United Brethren Church and later the Portland United Methodist Church. With his giving spirit, many persons of all ages lovingly called him ‘Grandpa’. His life was epitomized by love for the Lord, his church, and his family. He built two homes with recycled materials, many family home remodels and additions, a backyard covered bridge, greenhouses at Echo Mission in Florida, many work camps, and numerous craft projects. He also restored bicycles for children, tended his gardens, and his prize-winning dahlias; baked, canned and shared all these gifts with many. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jack and William, sisters Helen Sherman, Marguerite LeGault, and Beth Shearer; his 1st wife of 21 years Edith Marie Petrie in 1959; his 2nd wife of 36 years, Clarice Lucile (Schwab) Showerman in 1996. He is survived by his wife of 10 years Clarabelle (Martz) Barnum; children Evelyn (Ed) Martin, Richard Junior Cline, Paul Cline; step-children Louise Hill, Ralph (Kathie) Showerman, Joyce Showerman, Robert (Laurita) Showerman; identical twin brother Robert Adail Cline; 17 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and many nieces & nephews.
