Richard G. Small, age 86, was called home to be with his Redeemer on January 30, 2015 while at the Barron Center in Portland Maine, due to the long good-bye of Alzheimer’s.

Born in Portland, Maine, December 14, 1928 to Ethel Hamilton-Small and Melville G. Small of Lewiston. Richard grew up and resided in Portland graduating from Deering High School (1946), Northeast School of Accounting, and University of Maine at Orono (1950). Richard kept the accounts of his brother George F. Hamilton Service Station on Park Ave. from the age of 16.

Richard will be especially remembered for his service to others in both the building of the Kingdom of God and the Community of Greater Portland. He served with numerous community organizations including Portland Rotary Club, Brighton Medical Center board of directors, Portland Building Fund, Maine Health, American and New England Water Works Associations, and United Way. He served his Christian community through Gideon’s, Faith School of Theology board member, South Portland Church of the Nazarene membership where he taught Sunday School and served on various boards. He sang faithful in the choir for 30 years.

Richard enjoyed time with his family teaching them meticulous stewardship of home and vehicles as well as barreling (and yodeling) down the ski slopes of Maine. In later years, Richard enjoyed traveling the globe extensively with his wife Alice.

Richard is predeceased by both his parents and his eight half-siblings; Carl, Isabelle, George and Dwight Hamilton and Ray, Willis, Carolina and Ruth Small. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice Hooper Small, their four children, Gail Crocker, R. Thanks to the Barron Center staff and volunteers for their magnificent support of Richard and the family.
