Age 86, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2009. He was born on January 10, 1923 in Ionia the son of Lee and Agnes (Humphries) Schafer. Mr. Schafer was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, a graduate of Ss. Peter and Paul Academy in 1941 and a lifetime member of the Ionia Knights of Columbus Council. He was a Veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army and he was a member of the American Legion #175 in Saranac and the Lyons/Muir VFW Post #4646. He retired from General Tire in Ionia after several years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Ruth Bauermeister, Louella Boyd, Katie Poole, Mary Edwards, Richard Schafer, and Robert Schafer. He married Mary Stratz on January 12, 1952 and she survives him. Also surviving are a sister, Virginia McKenna; sisters-in-law, Trudy and Arlene Schafer, Evelyn Weitzel and Augusta Stratz; special nieces, Judy (Edward) Clark and Gail (Dan) Lower; several nieces and nephews.
