Dr. Perry Jones Hockaday Sr., passed away peacefully at his home on August 12, 2022 at the age of 88.
Perry Hockaday was born on July 23, 1934 in Trenton Tennessee to Jessie Edward and Lela Mae Hockaday. He graduated from Peabody High School in 1953 and attended The University of Tennessee at Martin. He attended The University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis and then completed his residency at Mobile General Hospital in Mobile Al, where he met and married Karleen Barnes and had two sons, Perry Jr and Stephen. He was a proud member of JROTC in High School and ROTC in College. Upon completion of his medical degree, Dr. Hockaday served as a Flight Surgeon in the United States Air Force until 1972. Following discharge, he moved his family to Pascagoula, and began a medical practice that would span 35 years. “Doc” also served as team physician for the Pascagoula High School Football team for many years.
“Doc” loved to watch his sons and grandson play football and baseball. He was an avid golfer and longtime member of Pascagoula Country Club. He loved to ski and made many trips to Colorado often taking his grandchildren, who knew him as “Papa Doc.” In retirement he took up woodworking and built furniture for friends and family.
Dr. Hockaday was preceded in death by his wife Linda Joyce Baylis Hockaday, his brother, Edward Hockaday of Trenton, TN, his sister, Nancy Miller of Dixon, KY, and his grandson Jordan Barnes Hockaday.
Dr. Hockaday is survived by his sons Perry Hockaday Jr and Stephen Hockaday (Nancy), stepsons Craig Horn (Lisa) and Tim Horn (Sarah), grandchildren; Jason Hockaday (Cameron), Taylor Hockaday, Dakota Hockaday, Dalton Hockaday, Jackson Horn (Abigael), Regan Horn, Katherine Horn Harrison (Jeffrey), Winston Horn (Caroline), Harrison Horn and Virginia Horn. Doc is also survived by three great-grandchildren; Alma Hockaday, Zoey Hockaday and Jason Hockaday Jr (JJ).
