Norman Russell Brackett, age 80, died at the Togus Hospice Unit, after a 2.5 year battle with cancer, on July 5, 2014. Born in New Harbor, ME on September 15, 1933, he was the son of Russell and Marion Brackett. Norm began lobstering from a skiff at age 12, and by 15 he was working alongside his father’s crew, purse seining for herring during the summer months. At age 16 he left Bristol High School to go fishing year round. When called to serve his country, Norm left the coast of Maine to become a member of the 11th Airborne, stationed at Fort Campbell KY during the Korean War. He was a paratrooper and squad leader on the sharp shooting team. After leaving the military, Norm fished with his father, and soon on his own. He was a charter member of the New Harbor Fisherman’s Co-op, and put his home up as collateral with the other charter members of the Co-op.
