Norma B. Higgins, 81 of Gray, died peacefully Friday January 18 after a brief illness. She was born October 4, 1931 in Portland, to Lee and Louisa Bishop. She graduated from Pennell Institute in Gray in 1949. Norma married Theodore Higgins in 1950 and together they raised 6 children.

Norma worked at Pineland Center for 24 years as executive assistant to the Business Manager and later for the Superintendent. She was witness to the gradual closing of Pineland and a constantly changing line of administrators. Many of her co-workers thought she was the glue that held the place together.

She retired in 1996 and enjoyed yearly vacations in Florida with her husband Ted, and later with her sister Jeanette and her husband Dave, attending many Red Sox spring training games and making many new friends.

Norma was blessed with a sense of humor and of the absurd; whether regaling guests with witty observations and stories or cracking jokes from her back bench position at her beloved Gray Congregational Church. Norma never lost her sense of the beauty and wonder of life.

She loved her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and would host family get togethers for all comers at her house in Gray. She loved sitting around the pool reading and savoring the sights, sounds and aromas of summer.

Norma was a great listener who never judged or offered unsolicited advice. Patient and tolerant, she offered love and encouragement to relatives and friends who sought her support.

She is survived by six children; Diane of Auburn, Chris and his wife Karen of Longview, Texas, Mike and his wife Judy of Raymond, Mark and his wife Nancy of Gray, Lisa of Casco and Eric of Portland, her sister, Jeanette of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, two nephews and one niece.
