Nina Suihkonen Obituary:
Nina Skjold Anderson Suihkonen, 91, of Virginia, MN died January 22, 2017. She was born on December 28, 1925 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the first daughter of John & Hazel Skjold. She taught elementary school students in Karlstad, MN where she met her first husband, Milton Anderson, and they were married on June 27, 1947 in Grand Forks, N.D.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Milton, and daughter, Sonja, and son, Roger and her siblings, Hazel, John, Bjorn, Thorun, Sigrid, Tommy and Steve. For many years she remained single and then went back to school where she both studied and served as a Grief Counselor for St. Louis County and the Range Mental Health organizations. Thru this work she met and later married Eino Suihkonen and they spent 31 years together rebuilding their lives, traveling (they visited all of the lower 48 states together) and enjoyed time with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Eino passed away on April 11, 2016.
Nina is survived by her children: Milt Jr. (Anita) Anderson of Houston, Dale Anderson of Virginia and Mark (Nancy) Anderson of Duluth, Becky (Jim) Planton of Soudan, Linda (Dan) Masica of Butte, Mont., John (Julie) Suihkonen of Tower, Roberta “Bertie” (Russ) Webb of Embarrass, Bill (Jayanne) Suihkonen of Tower, Ann (Brian) Moravek of Galesburg, Mich., Carol (Jim) Hebl of Aurora, Tom (Dena) Suihkonen of Tower; grand-children, Denton, Brian, Dagny, Naeomi, Nathan, Sarah, Rachel, Mike, Melissa, Alex, Betty, Chris, Jon, Steven, David, Billy, Angela, Matt, Joe, Andrew, Andi, Ari, Gabby, and Libby; 18 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; brothers: Peter Skjold of Cleveland, OH, Harris Skjold of Durango, CO and numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
Nina raised five children and was very active in supporting the Gilbert school and various church groups. She was a mentor to the younger faculty wives and to all the women that she knew. Up until the last week of her life she was counseling young professionals who were caring for her. Her evening chocolate get-togethers were a highlight of the day where she shared stories with her friends at Edgewood Vista. She loved to play the piano and accompanied church choirs and chorale groups. Knitting, sewing and needlepoint were her joy. She always had a project in process and would knit in the car, while talking with friends, or watching TV. She taught the youngest children in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at Trinity Lutheran Church in Virginia.
