     Naomi F. Buckalew of Denton, MD, passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at

The University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD, at the age of 76.

     Born on New Hopes Farm, Denton, MD, Naomi was the fourth of twelve children born to John A. Fuchs and Frieda Schmick Fuchs. A 1957 graduate of Caroline County High School, Naomi earned her RN degree from the Easton Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1960. She earned her BS in Nursing Science from Saint Joseph’s College,

Standish, Maine. Naomi was a psychiatric nurse working for the state of Maryland at Crownsville Mental Hospital and later at Cheltenham Youth Facility.

     In her youth, Naomi was an active 4-H member and served as club leader for her sister Ellen’s 4-H Club. Naomi was inducted as a 4-H All Star in Caroline County and became a life member of the Maryland Chapter of 4-H Club All Stars. Naomi was a woman of many interests – chief among them was travel. She had traveled to all 7 continents and every state in the United States.

     Additionally, Naomi loved gardening. She was an active member of the Caroline County Gardening Club serving as club President from 2009 – 2011. Naomi was a University of Maryland Extension Master Gardener. She maintained a small vegetable garden at her home as well as several perennial beds.

Naomi also enjoyed needlecrafts. Her many needlepoint projects adorned pillows and walls in her home and earned her blue ribbons at the Caroline County 4-H Fair. She was also an accomplished knitter.

     Naomi lived in Anne Arundel County for approximately 40 years before retiring and moving back to the Eastern Shore. She reconnected with fellow students from Caroline County High School, especially members of the class of ’57 with whom she dined monthly.

     Surviving Naomi is her daughter Claudia Coleman Johnson; from Naomi’s marriage to Ronald Coleman of Tilghman, MD, and her finance Glen Ruff. Naomi is also survived by her siblings: Barbara Wright of Seaford, DE; Ernest and Adele Fuchs of Easton, MD; Henry and Rose Marie Fuchs, Joanne and Hugh Smith, Rebecca and Nicholas Loukides, Phillip Fuchs all of Denton; Louis and Joan Fuchs of Harrington, DE; Ellen and C. Steve Mulder of Cordova, MD; Mark and Lynn Fuchs of Ridgely, MD; and Gary Fuchs and his wife Cathie Parsley of Austin, TX. Twenty nieces and nephews and 28 great nieces and nephews also survive her. Her parents, her second husband Rupert Buckalew, her son-in-law Philip Johnson of Cambridge, MD, her sister Lois Clark, 2 brothers-in-law, 2 nephews and 1 great nephew predeceased Naomi.
