Mohan Naraindas Nandwani, a resident of Sint Maarten, passed away on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at the age of 81 at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, MD. Mohan was born on November 17, 1936, in Hyderabad, Sindh, India. He was the son of the late Naraindas and Gomibhai Nandwani.
Mohan had a very adventurous and pioneering spirit. He left India in his early twenties to work abroad. While working as a salesman in the textile industry he traveled extensively within the Far East, Middle East, and to South America. He eventually settled with his wife, Vidya, on the island of Sint Maarten. He and his brother were amongst the first Indian businessmen to settle on the island. Mohan was very active in both the Indian community and the local community of Sint Maarten and over the years became a well-respected elder. He was a member of the Lions Club, he was the founder of the first Indian Merchants Association on Sint Maarten, and he sat on the board of the Chamber of Commerce of Sint Maarten. Mohan was a successful business owner of Mohan’s N.V. and Mille Fleurs jewelry store.
He was very charismatic and throughout all his travels and career he made many friends and connections with the people he met. He was fluent in several languages including Sindhi, Hindi, Urdu, Dutch, and English. He had a very strong interest in music: in his younger days he sang on All India Radio, he was an avid tabla player and he loved Indian classical music and ghazals. He was very spiritual: he practiced yoga even up until his last days and was a devout Hindu. He was an excellent cook and enjoyed making traditional Sindhi dishes for his family.
Mohan is survived by his wife of 53 years, Vidya Nandwani, his 2 daughters: Chitra Sarita Nandwani and her husband Ramon Espinosa, and Veena Nandwani and her husband Paul Joseph McCarthy, his cherished grandson Andrew Shay McCarthy, his sister Kiki and many nieces and nephews in India, The Netherlands, Aruba, Sint Maarten, and the U.S.A. His sisters Sugini and Ganga, and brothers Tulsidas and Gulabchand Nandwani preceded him in death.
