Mildred Evelyn Sipola

Mildred Evelyn (Ikola) Sipola, 88 of Virginia, MN and Lake Eshquagama, MN; formerly of Mesa, AZ for 26 winters, died April 20, 2009 in the Virginia Regional Medical Center Convalescent Center after a brief illness, with her family at her side.

Millie was born December 16, 1920 in Eveleth, MN the daughter of Emil and Vilda (Isomaki) Ikola. She graduated from Eveleth High School and Eveleth Jr. College. She then attended Iowa State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics. She married Leslie M. Sipola on August 15, 1944. Millie taught Home Economics in Gilbert, MN, Fenville, MI, Calumet City, IN, and in Virginia Junior and Senior High Schools.

Millie was an excellent cook and seamstress, and an avid golfer. She was the City of Virginia and Eshquagama Country Club Ladies’ Golf Champion numerous years. She loved Eshquagama Ladies’ Fun Days and enjoyed rehabbing items from Goodwill into elaborate costumes for that day. Millie loved to laugh and to tell a good joke. She made a friend everywhere she went. She enjoyed finding things at rummage sales and “making them good”. Millie was also an artist and painted several paintings and made pottery. She was proud of the fact that she swam in all of the Great Lakes, both oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, and traveled the Panama Canal both ways. She was fiercely independent and opinionated.

Family would like to thank the third floor nursing staff at VRMC-VCC for the kindness and caring they provided to Millie after her strokes last year, and during her recent final days with them. Special thanks to Kristy, her speech therapist, who worked with her for so many months and restored her ability to communicate. Thanks also to Dr. Jamal for his continuing care and personal attention for the last three years.

She will be sadly missed, and is survived by sons; Dr. Don (JoAnn) of Virginia, MN and William (Janet) of Haslett, MI; grandchildren; Kyle of Florida, Matt of Virginia, MN, and Dana of Haslett, MI; two nieces; JoAnn (Ikola) Olson of Duluth, MN and Carol Zimmerman of New York, NY.
Millie was preceded in death by her parents; step mother; Edla; Husband: Dr. Leslie in 1995; brother; Harold (Ike); sisters-in-law; Kanerva Anderson, Ruth Zimmerman, and Walma Snetsinger; and nephew; Dam Ikola.
