Fisherman, hunter, athlete and all around outdoorsman, Melvyn Douglas Gautier passed from this life on Sunday, September 26th in Gautier, MS at the age of 82.
Doug was dedicated husband of 57 years to his wife Pat and a loving father to his children, Richard and Gina. He reveled in the time he got to spend with his four Grandchildren, Haley, Blake, Mason and Presley. Doug became a happy great-grandpaw last year with the birth of Haley’s daughter, Ellie Kate.
Drafted out of High School by the Brooklyn Dodgers, he played for their farm team before an injury sidelined his baseball career. With baseball still a great love, he played for his Infantry team and coached youth sports when the US Army stationed him in Germany.
Upon his return, Doug went to work selling cars for Bubba Oustalet briefly before hiring on at Ingalls Shipbuilding. In 1966, he began what would become a 28 year career at the Chevron Pascagoula Refinery where he held many positions and retired as a Shift Supervisor.
Doug was an avid hunter and golfer but the one constant in his life was his love of fishing. Whether fishing for specks on the Middle Ground, flounder at Tucei’s Barrel or bass from Lake Seminole, Florida to Toledo Bend, Texas, Doug was never more comfortable than when he was in a boat landing another big fish.
In addition to Pat and his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild, Doug is survived by his sister Mary Evelyn (Joe)Brumfield. He is preceded in death by his father Richard, mother Louella and brothers Gerald and Henry.
