Mary Klein Powers, age 98, died April 24, 2018, at the Lorien Assisted Living Facility, Mt. Airy, MD. She was born September 24, 1919, in Shanghai, China, to Robert Klein and Margaret Klein (née An Chan).
Her father was retired Navy, Medal of Honor recipient (1904). She lived in Shanghai, China, until the Japanese takeover. She came to the United States in the first Japanese-American prisoner exchange early in WWII. She returned to China at the end of the war with UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency). She met her husband, Walter Thomas Powers, a Canadian who was also working with UNRRA. They fell in love and were married in Shanghai in 1946. Upon returning to the U.S., she was a homemaker, raising three sons, Robert, Patrick and Raymond.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Walter of 65 years, and her sons Robert and Raymond. She was also predeceased by her three brothers (William, George and Edward Klein) and one sister (Olivia Klein). She is survived by one son, Patrick Powers (Ginger), and grandchildren Janis Powers, Dana Lawson (Andrew), Cameron Bays, and three great-grandchildren. Mary is remembered as an excellent homemaker. She was skilled at working with her hands in cooking, crafts, gardening, rug-braiding, and sewing.
