Mrs. Mary Helen Thwaites of Ionia, age 90, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2011.
She was born the daughter of Frank and Katherine (Kalkofen) Abfalter on December 8, 1920 in Ionia. Mary graduated from S.S. Peter & Paul Academy in 1938 and was a life long member of S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She married her high school sweetheart Fred Thwaites on January 12, 1942. They were married for 55 years until his death in 1998. Together, they owned and operated Fred’s Food Centre on M-21 and M-66 for over 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Enola Bannan, Dorothy Root and Charlotte Lapo, son-in-law, Roger Burns and baby great grandson Tate Burns.
Surviving are her children, Mary (Kathy) Burns-Rodriguez (Neno) of Grand Rapids, Marsha Olsen of Ionia, Fritz Thwaites of Ionia and Chrisanne Lundstrom of Ionia as well as 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, and nephew Phil Bannan.
