Mary Genevieve “Genny” Read of Palo, passed away on September 19, 2013 at age 91 at Elizabeth’s House Adult Care in Saranac. Genny, as she was known to her family and friends was born on November 16, 1921 to Edward and Lillian “Lilly” Kilduff of Ionia. Genny married Thomas H. Read, a farmer from Lowell, and graduated Ss. Peter and Paul Academy, St. Lawrence School of Nursing in Lansing as a Registered Nurse, and Aquinas College in Grand Rapids with a Bachelors Degree in Management. She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia, was a member of the Army Nurse Corp. during World War II, and one of the founders of the Ionia County Dairy Diplomats, promoting dairy farms and the Ionia Free Fair that sells milk. She also volunteered at the First Aid station at the fair. Genny worked as a registered nurse at Ionia Community Hospital. During her nursing career she was often called upon by hospitals in the area to fill in as a Supervisor, including Butterworth and Blodgett hospitals in Grand Rapids. She worked several years as a private duty nurse, and also at the Ionia State Hospital, where she worked until retirement in 1983. During her retirement she was a member of the Ionia Altar Rosary Society, the Sheridan V.F.W. Post, and the Geneology Club. She volunteered at the Ionia Hospital Guild and the Commission on Aging, Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and 4-H activities. Genny enjoyed her many travels and the family farm. Preceding her in death were her husband, Thomas H. Read; son, Brian Read; parents; brothers, Carroll (Vivian) Kilduff of Santa Anna, CA, William (Margaret) Kilduff of Ionia, and Robert Kilduff of Muir. Genny is survived by her children, Sharon Adams of Alma, Curt Read of Federal Way, Washington and Palo, Timothy Read of Ionia, and Thomas (Loree Ann Weaver-Read) Read of Palo; step brother-in-law, Marvin Leach of Florida; sister, Patricia (Dick) Shook of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Curt) Hockstra of Edmore, Jamie (Libby) Adams of Ypsilanti, Christopher Read of Idaho, Christina Read of Oklahoma, and Caren Read of Washington; great grandchildren, Megan Hockstra of Mt. Pleasant, and Alex and Morgan Adams of Ypsilanti; several nieces and nephews.
