Mary E. Boyce exemplified the word “mother” with her devotion and endless love for her family. Ninety-six years old, she was born July 21, 1910, the first of three children to Clara and Harvey Warner in Kalamazoo. She attended Kalamazoo Schools and upon her graduation she attended the Chicago Art Institute where she studied her hobby and love – art. Upon her return to Kalamazoo and while working at the Kalamazoo Creamery she met and in 1936 married Robert B. Boyce, a fellow employee. Mary and Bob started their married life in Scotts where Bob was employed, but soon moved to the Kalamazoo Milwood area until 1957 when they moved to Ionia. Mary remained in Ionia until after Bob’s death in 1997 when she returned to Kalamazoo. Mary is survived by her brother, Richard Warner and several nieces and nephews as well as her children, Nancy Lyon and Robert W. (Carole), 6 grandchildren, Patricia (Scott) Parker, Phyllis Dunning, Edward (JoAnna) Dunning, Brent (Alecia) Boyce, Brad (Laurie) Boyce and Kelly (John) Koetsier along with 6 great grandchildren, Ashley (Ryan) Witt, Courtney Parker, Alex Shirey, Tyler Parker, Autumn Motter, Catherine and Lauren Dunning, and Oliver Boyce and a great-great grandchild on the way. Mary was a devoted spouse to husband Bob as he pursued his career as an educator and she enjoyed her hobby as an artist as time allowed. She also enjoyed cooking for family and friends, and as they will attest, she did a very good job. Mary was an active member of the Ionia First United Methodist Church, she belonged to several art organizations and was chairperson of the art display at the Ionia Free Fair for several years. She was preceded in death by her sister, Esther Vermeulen, as well as her husband, Bob. Our special thanks to the caregivers at Crystal Woods and all of her other caregivers over the years.
