Mary C. McHugh-Warren, a long time resident of San Mateo, CA, died on July 27, 2006 at Portalo Place Residential Home. Mary Culver was born to Verner and Dora (Stoltz) Berry on December 4, 1922 at their homestead in Hiwood Township, in what is now Beltrami Island State Forest, south of Warroad, MN. The family moved to Cedarbend Township in 1929. Mary graduated from Warroad High School and then attended Miss McBroom’s Normal School for teachers training. She taught country school until deciding to venture to Seattle, WA in 1943. Mary worked as a switchboard operator and met Navy officer Edward McHugh. Following their marriage, they lived in Seattle, New Orleans, and San Mateo, moving with Ed’s career in the railroad. Despite living far from family, Mary kept in close contact with her brothers and sister and their children.
