Marjorie W. Plante, 100, passed away at her home on the afternoon of April 19th, with her loving family by her side. Born on November 6, 1912 in Damariscotta, she was the daughter of Joseph T. and Mary (Flint) West. Marjorie lived her entire life on School Street, and attended Damariscotta schools. She graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1930, one of 14 students in her class. While in high school, she would spend her summers working as a chambermaid for the Russell House on Rutherford Island in South Bristol. After graduation, she went to work at the Five and Dime, the Lincoln County News, and Clark’s Spa. While at Clark’s Spa, she waited on many customers daily, but there was one gentleman who came to town to work on the steeple at the Damariscotta Baptist Church that really caught her eye. He would spend his lunch breaks at the spa, and in 1936 Marjorie and George Plante started their life together as husband and wife. In 1950, Marjorie went to work at the First National Bank in Damariscotta. She started as a teller at the bank when it was at it’s original location at the Day Block in town. She retired in 1977, after 27 dedicated years, as their first female loan officer. Marjorie loved her flower garden and enjoyed being outside, but it was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren that were her true pride and joy. She will be remembered by her family for her quick wit and snappy one liners. She was predeceased by her husband, George Plante in 1986; her only son, Barry “Gus” Knott, Sr. in 2007; and her four siblings, Louis West, Joseph “Hooker” West, Walter “Hun” West and Betty Morton. She is survived by her loving grandchildren, Barry Knott, Jr. and his companion Angie Powell of Damariscotta, Cindy Clifford and her husband Robert of Walpole, Dean Knott and his wife Bonnie of Damariscotta, and Elaine Poland and her husband David of Damariscotta; her daughter-in-law, Anne Knott of Damariscotta; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 step-great-grandson; as well as two nieces, and one nephew.
