Marjorie Frances Smedsmo, age 86, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2006, at her daughter’s home following a prolonged illness.
Marjorie Michal was born January 7, 1920 in Chelsea, Iowa to Frank and May (Moody) Michal. The Michal family moved to Spruce Township just east of Roseau, MN in 1921 where Marjorie grew up, attended the Roseau Public School and graduated in 1938. She married her husband of 65 years, T. Albert Smedsmo, on December 6, 1941 on the eve of Pearl Harbor. While her husband was serving overseas, Marjorie was employed by the Boeing Corporation in Seattle, WA building airplanes for the war effort. Following the war, the couple returned to Roseau where they farmed in Enstrom Township and raised their family. Marjorie, Albert and their daughter Annette relocated to Naples, Florida in 1965 where Marjorie was a real estate sales person.
Marjorie was very active as a Girls Scout Leader and both she and Albert were charter members of the Everglades Lodge of the Sons of Norway. The couple worked their voting precinct in local, state and national elections in Collier County, Florida for many years.
Following retirement the couple traveled around the U.S. and to Norway. The always smiling Marjorie will be remembered for her charm, humor, sweet personality and love of crossword puzzles.
Marjorie is survived by her sons James of Warroad, Dennis (Barb) of Roseau, daughter Annette (Ken) Mogell of Boca Raton, Florida, and her brother Stanton (Shirley) Michal of Crosslake, MN. She was the proud grandmother of Kim, Jamie, Deaune, Darrin, Kelsey, and Katie, and great-grandmother to Tatum, Sean, Rowman, and Ian. Also surviving are sister-in-laws Edith, Vi, Irene, and Genevieve Michal, and brother-in-law Lloyd Hageman.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband Albert, parents, sisters, Lill Hageman and Eileen Michal, brothers Henry (Hank), Frank Jr., Louis, Donald, George, Richard, Lloyd, and Clinton.
