Marie Adeline (Schneider) Martin of Westphalia passed away with family at her side on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at the age of 74. Marie was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church in Westphalia and Christian Mothers Confraternity. She was born the 11th child to the late Andrew and Mary (Rademacher) Schneider on May 6, 1943 in Portland, MI. She was a member of the last graduating class of St Mary High School Westphalia, the class of 1961. From there Marie went on to earn a degree from St Lawrence School of Nursing in Lansing, graduating in the summer of 1964.
Marie married her lifelong companion John (Jack) Martin on May 30, 1964 at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Westphalia. Together they raised 6 children on their family dairy farm just 1 mile from where Marie was born and raised. She served as the core of the house hold on the farm caring for their children and all the while maintaining a rewarding career in nursing which included caring for patients at Clinton Memorial Hospital in St Johns, St. Lawrence in Lansing, Sparrow Hospital in Lansing and Dr. Schroeder’s office in Westphalia.
Throughout her life Marie was a devoted Catholic, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Together she and Jack watched their family grow to 27 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. She enjoyed gardening, planting roses, cooking and socializing with neighbors and relatives. She had a special love for raising Collie and Pomeranian puppies. Marie also had a special gift of a solid memory, with a knack of remembering dates and numbers.
Marie is survived by her husband of 53 years, John; her children Dave of Pewamo, Michelle (Chris) Wells of St Johns, Dan (Julie) of Westphalia, John L. (Tammy) of Westphalia, Dianne (Tom) Cook of Pewamo, and Bill (Dawn) Martin of Pewamo; her grandchildren and great grandchildren; her brothers Richard (Helen) Schneider of Westphalia and Edwin (Monica) Schneider of Dewitt, MI; sister-in-law Agnes Schneider of Carson City, MI and Alice Schneider of Fowler, MI; brother-in-law Robert Nurenberg of St. Johns, MI, and many nieces and nephews.
She was proceeded in death by a daughter Mary Martin; her parents; brothers Alfred, Melvin (Margaret), Donald, Gerald (Therese), Leonard (Mary “Pat”) and Stanley; sisters, Sister Adeline and Germaine Nurenberg.
