Margaret “Peg” Sproul, 96, of Pemaquid, passed away on the evening of July 31st with her daughter Laura, and her wonderful caregivers at Coves Edge by her side. Born on April 14th 1914, she was the daughter of Jay G. and Louisa (Wheeler) Hamilton. Peg led a full life, not just in years, but in accomplishments. She was a lawyer, practicing law out of her home in Pemaquid for many years. She was both a State Representative and State Senator, and at one point, she was one of only three females serving as such in the State. Peg was a founding member of the First Church of Christ Scientist of Damariscotta / Newcastle and was the principle owner of Sproul’s Furniture in Newcastle, which her husband started in 1939. Peg cherished people, God, dogs, cats, children, being outdoors, being who you are, and integrity. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John A. Sproul in 1992; her brother, Jay G. Hamilton, Jr. in 1992; her son-in-law, Richard L. Stubbs in 2007; and her sister, Louisa Soule, who passed away 20 minutes before her on the same evening. Besides her family, she leaves behind a legacy that will live on in the John and Peg Sproul Preserve in Bristol.
