Marcella Mollers age 88 of Tower, passed away on December 4, 2011, at Golden Horizons Assisted Living in Tower. She was born November 2, 1923 in Kugler Twp., the daughter of Ole and Julia (Josjor) Nelson, was a 1941 graduate of Tower-Soudan High school and a 1943 graduate of the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester. Marcella grew up during difficult economic times when options were limited for women. She chose nursing and worked as a registered nurse, head nurse and assistant superintendent of nurses at Virginia Municipal Hospital until 1951. In 1954, after working as a Public Health Nurse for St. Louis County she was appointed director of the Pioneers Infirmary in Virginia and the Mesaba Nursing Home in Buhl. In 1962, she married Ted Mollers and moved to Golden Valley, Minnesota.
During her years in Golden Valley, she encouraged her sister Pauline to go to college and became a second Mom to her nieces and nephew. She taught them to garden, to fix things around the home, to understand football, and to change a tire; their careers in nursing, teaching, baking and journalism are all a testament to “Aunt‘s” influence.
At her cabin on Lake Minnewawa, she volunteered countless hours to the Lake Minnewawa Association raising money to purchase a weed harvester; a recent purchase of a new harvester was named ‘Marcella’ in her honor.
Marcella moved back home to Tower, Minnesota in 1994 and was elected to the City Council. During her term, she updated the City Charter. As a member of the Women’s Club, she helped to plant and tend to the flower boxes on Main Street.
