Bath- Malcolm J. Miller, 88, of Western Ave. died Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Winship Green Nursing Center in Bath.
He was born in North Jay on June 17, 1922, a son of Jarvis and Harriet Miller. He was the youngest of seven children and grew up in Caribou. At the age of 17 he joined the Civilian Corp for two years. He then hitch-hiked to Bath to find work at Bath Iron Works. He was hired on the first day he arrived. He met and married Ruth Reed in 1942 and they had three children, Bruce, Sharon and Dennis. He was drafted in to the Army in 1943 and served three years in the 42nd Rainbow 232nd Infantry Division. He served in France and Germany and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. When he arrived home he went back to work for Bath Iron Works, retiring in 1987. In 1978, his wife passed away. In 1983 he married Edith Gallagher. They enjoyed bus tours and time spent together. After 33 years he retired as a Call Volunteer with the Bath Fire Department. He was presented with the Bronze Star Medal by Captain Joshua Jacques at a special ceremony in July of 2010 at the Patten Free Library in Bath with family and friends present. He was also presented with a special plaque from the City of Bath for his community service. Also present were members of the Bath Fire Department expressing their thanks and the Mason’s giving a special recognition. Pastor Sullivan of the Corliss Street Baptist Church ended the service with a prayer. He was given a ride home after the service in a Bath Fire Truck.
He was an active man, always having a project to do, especially working with wood. He loved working in his vegetable garden always trying out new tomato plants and loved sharing his harvest with others. He loved meeting and talking with people about the “good old days” , always ending with a funny story he had to tell. For those of you who knew Malcolm, he was a very proud man who stood tall in the community and was solid amongst his family and friends. He was the glue that kept all together. He never met a stranger and will be sadly missed by many, especially those closest to him. The world is a better place because of him. Malcolm (Mac to his friends) was a loving and generous man to those around him.
He was an active member of the Corliss Street Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School, served on the Board of Deacon’s, Board of Trustee’s and was Head Usher for many years. He loved his church and there was nothing he enjoyed more than being with his family. He also was a Scout Master for Troop 99, a member of the Civil Air Patrol, he served as Past Master of Solar Lodge #14 and volunteered at the Bath Soup Kitchen.
He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Edward and Carleton and four sisters, Annette, Lola, Beulah and Iona.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Miller of Bath, three children, Bruce Miller and his wife Carol of Marietta, GA, Sharon Kempel and her husband Steve of Douglasville, GA and Dennis Miller and his wife Janet of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, three stepsons, David Gallagher and his wife Helen of Bremen, Timothy Gallagher of Houston, TX and Michael Gallagher of Mesa, AZ, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, one great great grandson and a new great granddaughter born minutes before Mac departed from us.
