Lydia Hipol Santos
In the early morning of May 8, 2014, Lydia passed away at St. Joseph Mercy in Ann Arbor, Mich., as a result of complications from spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA). Lydia was 66 years old.
Lydia was born in Pasay City, Philippines on Dec. 27, 1947. She was the second child and second daughter of Formoso and Josefina Castro and younger sister of Amparo Alabado.
After receiving her bachelor’s degree in nursing, Lydia moved from the Philippines to Newark, NJ around 1971. She was a nurse at what is now known as Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. She moved to Michigan in 1973 to be closer to her sister Amparo. Lydia also bought a blue 1973 Ford Mustang with a 351 Windsor and we hear that she looked pretty cool driving it.
Lydia met her soon-to-be husband Diocelio (Del) Santos in Michigan and they married in 1974. They had a daughter named Leslie in 1975 and settled in Melvindale and later in Canton. In 1980, Lydia and Del had a son named Eric.
Lydia worked at various different hospitals in Michigan as a registered nurse in the operating room including Heritage in Taylor, Oakwood in Dearborn and Annapolis in Wayne. She finished her career at University of Michigan hospital in Ann Arbor as an RN in neurosurgery. She took significant pride in her profession and was extremely proud to work for the University of Michigan (thus all the U of M gear that would later fill the home).
Lydia was preceded in death by her father Formoso Castro and her mother Josefina Castro.
Lydia is survived by husband Del Santos, daughter Leslie Santos and son Eric Santos, daughter-in-law Bethany Santos, granddaughter Madelyn Santos, sister Amparo Alabado and brother-in-law Manuel Alabado, nieces Olivia Booker and Charito Hall, caregiver Evangeline Agaloos, loyal dog and companion Willow, and many family and friends.
Special thanks and considerations to the caring and skilled staff at St. Joseph Mercy in Ann Arbor and her primary care physician Dr. Jennifer Nastelin at University of Michigan healthcare system in Canton.
