LuLu Jane LaKosky Brown, Virginia’s beloved “Orangie”, age 76 of Virginia, died Friday, April 4, 2014 at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia. She was born July 31, 1937 in Indianapolis, IN, the daughter of Ollie Mae Wheeler and Robert Robbins. She grew up with her sharecropper grandparents in Mississippi and graduated from High School in Lambert, Miss. In 1957, Jane came north to live with her aunt and uncle, Hiram and Lavelle Halvorson in Marshall MN and help with their flying service. She married Bill LaKosky in Watertown, SD in 1961 and moved to Virginia. She worked for the Finkelstein Dentist office, and Arrowhead Nursing Home before working as a student aide for the Virginia Public Schools. Jane was a school security worker, and earned her nick name, “Orangie” serving as the crossing guard, and crowd control officer for High School sporting events. Both staff and students loved and respected her. Jane also served as a sexual assault counselor/advocate, and volunteered for the Land of the Loon committee. She moved back to Mississippi in 2002, married Leon Brown on June 8, 2003, and returned to Virginia in 2013.
Jane is survived by children: Betty Ziska of North Glen, CO, Ross (Jen) LaKosky of Franceville, IN, and Elaine (Carl) Toivari of Virginia; Grandchildren Caari and Kyle; and special friends Dennis “Caveman” (Marion) Raines and Katy Raines; extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, husbands Bill and Leon, and aunts and uncles.
To further science and research, Jane has donated her body to the Anatomy Bequest Program of the University of Minnesota.
