Lloyd “Bernie” Lamppa, age 89, of Virginia and formerly of Babbitt, MN, and Grand Island, NE, died Sunday, March 27, 2016 at Essentia Health Virginia Care Center. He was born October 30, 1926, in Embarrass, MN, the son of Richard and Rose (Rapinoja) Lamppa. He attended Embarrass High School. Bernie was united in marriage to Beatrice Ranta in Virginia in 1946.
A Veteran of the U.S. Navy, Bernie served on board the USS Curtiss in the Pacific Theatre during WWII.
Bernie worked as a civil engineer for Peter Kiewit & Sons construction estimating and supervising road construction projects for over 40 years. He retired in 1991. He was a member of the Pike Apostolic Lutheran Church. Lloyd enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Bernie is survived by his wife: Beatrice; four children: Carlen (Caroline) Lamppa of Embarrass, MN, Michael (Charlene) Lamppa of Savage, MN, Bernadette Bradshaw of Wichita, KS, and Russell (Melanie) Lamppa of New Hope, MN; three grandchildren: Brent (Melissa) Lamppa, Reece (Shannon) Lamppa, and Cassandra Lamppa; two great-grandchildren: Maggie and Allie; four brothers: Herbert (Edna) Lamppa of Tower, MN, Roger (Joan) Lamppa of Virginia, MN, Francis Lamppa of Ely, MN, and Fredrick (Karen) Lamppa of Britt, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Flora Koivisto and Kathleen Janeksala; and a brother: Raymond.
