Lawrence Erle Dean, 78, of Damascus, Maryland passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at his home of 43 years.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island on February 8, 1944, Larry was the only child of Dr. Harold Dean and Lenora Owen Dean.  He graduated from Marietta High School in Marietta, Ohio.  An early interest in electronics and ham radio led to his higher education and long career in the computer industry.  Larry received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Case Western Reserve University and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University.  After a distinguished career at IBM Corporation and Lockheed Martin Corporation, Larry retired in 2008.

After meeting in graduate school, Larry married Marie Walsh in 1970.  Larry was a kind, generous, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  His memory and legacy will endure and be celebrated by his loving wife of 52 years, Marie; his two children: Jonathan Dean (Allyson) and Michelle DePinho (David); and his six grandchildren: Luke, Rosemary, Laura, Owen, Joseph, and Anna.

After living in New Jersey early in their marriage, Larry and his family moved to Maryland in 1979 where they have resided for over 40 years.  Larry was the longstanding president of the Spring Garden Neighborhood Association in Damascus, successfully creating a sense of community and communication within the neighborhood.  Larry was incredibly skilled and handy.  He could fix, build, or restore nearly anything.  The tools in his basement are a testament to his many years of tinkering.

Larry’s hobbies and passions included photography and traveling.  Larry was an exceptional photographer, capturing images from his many travels, everyday life, nature, and family.  He was an active, award-winning member of the Gaithersburg Camera Club for more than two decades, often exhibiting his amazing photographs.  He combined this passion for photography with his travels as often as he could.  Over the years, he enjoyed traveling with Marie across the United States and to fifty different countries around the world, including Italy and Switzerland in recent weeks on a postponed 50th anniversary trip.
