Laurel Warren Bennett, the son of Edna T. (Nelson) and Stephen W. Bennett, was born on May 23, 1920 in Roseau, MN. He graduated from Roseau High School in 1939. He entered the U.S. Merchant Marines in 1942 and served until his honorable discharge in 1943. He attended Barber School in Minneapolis in 1950. He and Gladys (Love) were united in marriage on July 9, 1945 in Oakland, CA and moved to Roseau, MN shortly after their marriage. Laurel was employed at the Encore CafAC., which they owned and operated for 2 years, as well as barbering. They moved to International Falls in 1954 and lived for 9 months, before moving to Grand Marais, MN in 1955. They moved to Ely, MN where they owned and operated the Canadian Border Lodge. While there, Laurel started the fishing for Veterans, where he paid for disabled veterans to fish at his resort. Upon retirement, they moved to Babbitt, MN, then to Ely, and back to Roseau in 2000. Laurel was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Ely, the VFW and American Legion and enjoyed rock polishing, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling.

Laurel is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gladys in 2002; brothers, Jesse Bennett, Gordon Bennett, Donald Bennett and sister, Elaine (Bennett (Hardin.

Laurel is survived by his daughter, Bonnie (William) Mayerle of Ely, MN and son, Patrick (Evelyn) Bennett of Everett, WA; 8 grandchhildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
