  • Date Of Death: April 14, 2023
  • State: Maine

It was with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Kimla Yuong, age 61 of Portland, Maine, on Friday, April 14, 2023, after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family.

She was a resilient woman who rose to life’s challenges. She escaped bravely from the genocide in her home country; traveling to America with three small children and nothing more than the clothes on their backs. Everyone that knew Mom adored her kind heart. She was someone who would much rather give to others than enrich herself. She loved her family fiercely, especially her children, grandchildren, and life-partner. She had a unique sense of humor that derived from her unapologetic honesty. Her inner strength could move mountains; this strength allowed her to battle cancer for far longer than expected, fighting to the very end, so that she could choose to pass on her favorite holiday, Cambodian New Year.

Kimla is survived by her life partner, Chhoem Chin; children – Saruon “Lynn” Roeun (grandchildren Finn and Megan, Shaiden and Ayden), Sary and Vuthi Roeun (grandchildren Kason, Kaden and Kyla), Saren Roeun and Roth Keo (grandchildren Akarah and Aalani), Dearrow Chin, Savey Yuong and Linda Kim (grandchild Esme), Tina Yuong (grandchild Evelyn), and Teara Yuong; and a large extended family too grand to name individually.

Our family would like to thank the staff at MaineHealth Cancer Care (with a special shoutout to Dr. Michael Voisine and his team), Hospice of Southern Maine, and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for the love, care, compassion and support they provided throughout our journey. Truly, we could not have been placed in better hands.

She will be greatly missed. We will forever remember her teachings.
