Freeport – Kenneth John Peterson, “Papa,” 78, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully Friday October 31, 2014 at the Freeport Nursing Home with his son Michael and granddaughter Lydia by his side. Ken was born on February 25, 1936, in Portland to Ernest and Evelyn Peterson.
Kenneth grew up in Cumberland and spent most of his life living in the Gray area. He served 3 years in the Army in Fort Collins, Colorado. It was during this time that he met his first wife, Catherine Hope, and they had one son, Michael.
Ken spent many years as a long distance truck driver for Sanborn Trucking, Congdon Transportation and APA trucking. Ken loved animals, and tried his hand at raising chickens, goats, bunnies and other farm animals. After his retirement from trucking he worked part time at Pineland Farms working with the animals, and driving the tour bus. Ken also enjoyed NASCAR racing, was a big Jeff Gordon fan, and enjoyed tinkering on vehicles and farming equipment.
Ken was a loving Father, Grandfather, Brother, and friend. He will be missed by many and remembered fondly for his kind and generous spirit.
Ken is survived by his son Michael, his wife Sue, and granddaughter Lydia of Auburn, his loving sister Doris and husband Bill Thurston of Cumberland, his brothers Lloyd Peterson of Summerdale, Alabama and Richard Peterson of Arlington, Virginia, as well as his stepchildren, step-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their eternal gratitude to the staff of Freeport Nursing Home for their kind and loving care of Ken. Special thanks to Nicky RN and Jennifer, RN. Also to Cathy Register, LSW for her guidance and support of Ken and his family.
