Katherine M. May
Hastings, formerly of Escanaba
Hastings, Michigan – Katherine “Kutta/Kay” Mae (Serbin) May, age 91 passed away at Thornapple Manor early on February 27, 2017. Katherine was born on April 14, 1925 in Bessemer, Michigan. She was the daughter of Julia Mojeck and John Serbin and had fourteen brothers and sisters.
Katherine graduated from Bessemer High School and soon after graduating she moved to Detroit. Here, she met Herman (Bill) William May and married on June 8, 1946. They lived in Detroit for awhile, then moved to Warren, MI, where they raised their three children. After her husband retired, they decided to move back to the U.P. and settled in Escanaba, MI where they enjoyed the peace and quiet of living on Lake Michigan amid nature’s beauty.
Early on, Katherine worked as a waitress while attending and graduating from beauty college. She then worked 30 plus years in the medical field as an office manager in Warren and Escanaba, MI. Katherine’s greatest love was her family and proudest moments were when her children and grandchildren graduated from Michigan State University, Northern Michigan University and the University of Washington.
Mom was fun, strong and always willing to help. She was a loving sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. We will miss her enormously and love her continuously.
Katherine is survived by her husband Bill May of 70 years; three children, Kathy (Gordon)
Duffey, William (Virginia) May, and Marcia (Denny) Sekino; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Duffey and Jennifer (Jeff) Reynolds; and three sisters, Margaret Kuula, Annabelle Sellstrom, and Laverne Eady; along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Julia and John Serbin; eight brothers, Jackson Nahey, Michael Nahey, Louis Nahey, Charles Serbin, Evard Serbin, Robert Serbin, George Serbin, infant Joseph Serbin; and three sisters, Julia Vodopya, Florence Mikko, and Pauline Rajala.
The family would like to thank the staff at Thornapple Manor and Great Lakes Caring Hospice for their very compassionate and outstanding care of Mom.
