Age 90, passed away on Monday, June 22, 2009. She was born on August 27, 1918 in Portland, MI the daughter of Roy and Bessie (Grenier) Shepherd. She attended St. Patrick Catholic School before moving to Ionia in 1926 where she attended Ss. Peter and Paul Academy from which she graduated with the class of 1936. She married William “Jim” Spitzley of Westphalia on October 21, 1939 and lived in rural Westphalia on the Spitzley homestead the first five years of her married life. They then moved to a farm north of Ionia in Ronald Township where they resided for 44 years before moving to Easton Township. She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Altar Rosary Society, the St. Catherine Circle and Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. She was a volunteer worker for her church and the Commission on Aging for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years in June of 1995; son Francis Spitzley in 2004; son-in-law Tom Pancza in 1997; grandson-in-law Tim Ackerson in 1995; her parents; four brothers, Daniel, James, George, and Joseph; sister, Alice; She is survived by two sons, Dennis (Delores) Spitzley of Ionia and Lawrence (Pamela) Spitzley of Fenwick; four daughters, Susan Hogan of Centerville, Ohio, Patricia (Thomas) Reinhardt of Ionia, Phyllis (Danny) Richardson of Grand Rapids, and Mary Hogle and special friend Kevin Walsh of Grand Rapids; special friend, Nancy O’Brien of Mt. Pleasant; 22 wonderful grandchildren; 37 precious great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; many step grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; special niece, Elizabeth Slowinski Currie and nephew Joseph Slowinski and their families plus many other nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Lucille Shepherd of Kalkaska, MI and Estelle Schafer of Lansing.
