Julia Peterine Desannoy, age 102 of Virginia and formerly of Tower died Monday, January 11, 2010 in St. Raphael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born October 23, 1907 in Harmony, MN one day after her father, Peter J. McKay died; leaving her mother, Julia Sanderson McKay with baby Julia and three other children to raise. Julia grew up in Harmony and Austin, MN and graduated from High School in 1924. Julia earned her teaching degree from the University of Minnesota – Minneapolis in 1928; but was too young to be employed as a high school teacher, so she accepted a position at the University Library, where she earned a minor in Library Science. The next year, she accepted a position as high school mathematics instructor and librarian in Bricelyn, MN. In the fall of 1932, she moved to Tower to take a position as high school mathematics teacher and librarian. On July 14, 1935, she married Frank William Desannoy, putting an end to her teaching career, because most Iron Range Schools would not accept married women in teaching positions. She was very active in her role as mother and helping in the family dairy business “Frenchie’s Dairy”. Because of a shortage of teachers during WWII, she was re-hired as a mathematics teacher in Tower; a position she held for 6 years. Julia was employed at various part time jobs in businesses in Tower, until she accepted a position of bookkeeper at the Tower Municipal Liquor Store. In 1974 Julia and Frank moved to Virginia. She was a member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church; and a Past Worthy Matron of the Loyal Chapter #156 Order of the Eastern Star.
Julia is survived by children: Beverly Lawrence (Art Lehtonen) of Virginia and Bob (Sandra) Desannoy of Golden Valley, MN; son-in-law: John Stephenson; grandchildren: Kim (Randy) Waldron, Robert (Linda) Lawrence, Joseph (Susan) Desannoy, Jeffrey (Kate) Desannoy, Michelle (Matt) Tyrrell, Patty (Brian) Wallace, and Paul Stephenson; great-grandchildren: Chris (Sara) Waldron, Ashley Waldron, Danny Lawrence, Brittany Lawrence, Caleb Desannoy, Bradley Tyrrell, Madison Tyrrell, Julia Wallace, Jamie Wallace, and John Ryan Stephenson; a great-great-granddaughter: Mylee Waldron; niece: Marjorie Miller of Lake Jackson, TX; and a host of friends.
