Age 86, went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 3, 2014. He was born on February 26, 1928 in Elkton, MI the son of Thomas and Sarah Maxwell. John was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War and is retired from G.M. after 36 years of service. He was an avid bowler and was inducted into the Bowlers Hall of Fame. John was a member of the First Baptist Church in Portland and sang in the choir. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Maxwell in 2007. He is survived by his life partner, Esther Irrer; son, John (Debbie) Maxwell, Jr.; daughter, Sarah Maxwell; 9 step children; 3 adopted children; 23 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. The community will mourn the loss of John W. Maxwell, Sr..
