John Forest Sweet, age 85, longtime resident of Hibbing and Tower, died Monday, December 17, 2012, in Diamond Willow assisted living in Mt. Iron. He was born June 29, 1927 in Evanston, IL, the son of John W. and Harriet (Hopkins) Sweet. John received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Math and Physics Engineering from Northwestern University in 1951. He was united in marriage to Jeannette Jeffery on May 24, 1950, Crown Point, IN. A veteran of the USMC, John served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, and was re-called for the Korean War. He attained the rank of Captain.
John worked at the Erie Mining Co. where he was selected to serve on the National Safety Council from 1970-74. He was appointed to the State Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying and Landscape Architecture of 1982 and served as a member of this board for 12 years including Vice-Chairman 1990-92, and Chairman 1992-94. He retired from Hibbing Taconite Co. in 1987 as Chief Plant Engineer following 30 years of service with Pickands Mather & Co.
John served as a School Board member of Tower-Soudan from 1963-69, and was chairman in 1969. He was a 50+-year member of the Nelson Jackson American Legion Post in Tower, and served as its chairman. He was a Trustee and ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church. He was a Counselor with the Westminster Youth Fellowship at St. James Presbyterian Church in Tower, and was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader from 1958-1966.
John is survived by his children: John (Debbie) Sweet, Jr. of Lake Vermilion – Tower & Scottsdale, AZ and Sharlyn (Charles) Dahl of Mt. Iron; grandchildren: Jonathan (Lorie) Sweet, Kyle (Alice) Sweet, Russell (Charissa) Dahl, Stephen Dahl, & Timothy (Joanna) Dahl; great grandchildren: Jules Sweet, Devyn Dahl, Derik Dahl, Brooke Dahl, Ashley Dahl, David Sweet, Zachary Sweet, and Zane Sweet; a sister: Alison Enderlin of Deerfield, IL; sisters and brothers in-law: Barbara (Edward) Forester, Dana Storch, and Jan Jeffery; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Jeannette in 2008.
