John Sharp, 93, formerly of Hannibal, died at 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at Delmar Gardens of Lenexa, KS.
He was born to Edward and Eleanor (Hunter) Sharp on March 28, 1921 in Ashington, Northumberland, England. When John was just a toddler, his extended family moved from England to the United States to work in the coal mines of southern Illinois. He grew up in Benton, Illinois, where he graduated high school in 1939. Later, he attended the University of Illinois. John proudly served his country during WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, he was assigned as a Medic, serving primarily in New Guinea.
On September 20, 1947 he married Kathryn (Kay) Sharp, who preceded him in death in 2012. The couple enjoyed 65 years together.
In 1955, the Sharps moved to Hannibal, where they would make their home for 50 years. John and Kay co-owned Walkup’s Pharmacy, and later Breeding Transfer and Storage. They retired in 1990 and moved to Kansas City to be close to family in 2006.
John was a member of the First Christian Church of Hannibal for 50 years, he was also a former member of the Hannibal Rotary Club. An avid golfer, John could proudly boast of three holes in one. He carried with him many fond memories of golf trips taken with dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his sister, Shirley Walkup. Survivors include his daughter, Barbara Nicely (David) of Kansas City, grandchildren Blair Nicely and Christopher Nicely of Kansas City, as well as nephews and nieces: David (Debra) Walkup of Hannibal , Susan Walkup of St. Louis and Jane Vernon, Michele Haddock and Scott Dudley of Florida.
