John Sylvester Smith, age 100, peacefully passed away, Thursday, May 10, 2018 at Lorien Life Care Center, Mount Airy, Maryland.  Born April 4, 1918 in Daisy, Maryland he was a son of the late John David and Emma Mae Murray Smith.  He was the widower of Katherine A. VanPelt Smith who died September 14, 2016.

John was raised on a farm on Mullinix Mill Road, Mount Airy.  He followed in his father’s footsteps and became a huckster in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area delivering eggs, fresh turkeys, Produce, etc. to the “City” folks.  Earlier in his life he worked at Warfield Chevrolet in Mount Airy.  Due to health issues, John retired in 1976.  He and his wife loved to travel and would spend time at their cottage in Deep Creek, Maryland during the summer, and Florida during the winter.  John loved to tinker and his favorite tool to fix-it-all was WD40.

He was a member of Howard Chapel-Ridgeville United Methodist Church, The Antique Car Club of Frederick, Mount Airy Senior Center, and was the “unofficial” Mayor of Long Corner having lived at the same location for over 70 years.

Surviving is his daughter Ruth Ann Worsham of York, Pennsylvania; son Kenneth E. Smith and wife Lee of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania; step-son Carlton L. Dixon and wife, B.J. of Mount Airy.  Grandchildren: Lisa Maldonado; Brian Worsham and wife Lauren; Danielle Smith; and Heather Fitzpatrick and husband Matt.  Step-grandchildren: Michael C. Dixon; and Jennifer L. Wilson and husband Darren.  Great-grandchildren:  Alena Maldonado, Joshua and Alyssa Worsham, Ian Hargreaves, and Gwenyth Fitzpatrick. Step great-grandchildren: Kelsey DeCamp and husband Matt; Lauren Dixon; Nathen and Gracie Wilson; devoted niece Mary Frances Gosnell and long-time devoted neighbors Doris and Web Utz.

John was preceded in death by his sister Irene P. Hardy.

The family would like to thank Lorien Life Care Center and its staff for the loving care given to John while at Lorien.
