Obituary
John Joseph Thornton ascended into Heaven on the morning of April 4, 2018, at Troy Manor Nursing Home in Troy, MO. John was born 12/24/1945 to George Francis Thornton, Sr. and Grace Evelyn Roberson Thornton in St. Louis County. He joined two siblings George Francis Jr. (Sonny) and Robert Thornton, Sr. The family moved to O’Fallon from St. Louis, MO in 1949, to have a quieter more peaceful life. He married his former spouse Sheryl Hogan in 1976. John is preceded in death by his parents, George Francis Thornton, Sr, and Grace Evelyn Thornton nee Roberson, brother, George Francis (Sonny) Thornton, Jr and his wife Eva, brother, Robert Thornton, Sr. He is survived by his nieces and nephews- Cheryl Thornton of Hannibal,MO, Sharon (Mike) Damron of Dunlap, IL, and Robert Thornton, Jr. of Columbia, MO: sister-in-law, Joan Thornton. He is also survived by seven great nieces and nephews, and seven great-great nieces and nephews. John lived most of his life on Duello Rd. He helped his father and family build their home on the property and then eventually built his own home on the same property. He attended Wentzville High School. John worked various jobs throughout his lifetime, including; working at Wentzville High School,running his own Conoco station in Wentzville, working at GM, Chrysler and OTR trucking. John was a member of 2250 UAW. He was a quiet, private, thoughtful man that liked to live his life his own way. John was a Hot Rod enthusiast, enjoyed old cars, music and unique items. He treasured his time with family and friends. The family would like to say a special thank you to close friend Len and neighbors, Lisa and Paul for assisting John over the years and affording him an opportunity to stay in his own home. As well a special thank you to Troy Manor for treating John like a brother and friend, and to SSM hospice for helping John be at peace in his final days.
